THE RAAAANGE!!!! You were born dipped in cool, baby. I love your story, I love the bends and the u-turns. I love where you’re headed now and I especially love that you allow us to gobble it up on the way.
You have fantasy in your writer's heart. Your work hits hard. I don't even have much time to read Cultural essays but I'd walk across the street to read yours and I rarely leave my house.
You are hitting so many points I tried to convey to students at a CT college where I was their newspaper advisor/instructor and some to tell myself. You are a talented storyteller. I re-read every word here. And been there and LMAO: " wasn’t getting paid by this corny ass site but I didn’t care because I was writing" Oh I wrote for a 'corny ass' site when I was working in a newsroom and wanted to break out on my own. The site was very well known (around 2010+) and got professional writers to create columns, mine was an award winner...then had the audacity to take these "clips" down, never paid any of us, when they went 'legit' and hired a staff.
You remind us how easy it is to get lost in the noise, chasing validation, until the echoes become unbearable. What you wrote speaks to something universal and that is the struggle to align who we are with what we do. To stay true, even when the world tempts us with shortcuts that feel wrong in our bones. You chose the harder path. The honest one. And that’s worth everything.
Keep writing. Keep living honestly. The world needs more of that. More of you.
Appreciate you writing. Good voice, clean prose, the freelance editor brain didn’t even find any real hangnails, and people pay me for that shit. A++ Will gladly continue to read whatever you put out. (I can only imagine I read some of those schlock articles on Elite Daily, my god.)
Bout to run an editorial fiction workshop for short stories (4k word cap) with a comrade from the indie editor world. But on Substack posts I’m usually pretty vocal.
I cannot turn the editor brain off. I edit as I read everything on this platform. I hate myself for it.
