Quote of the Week: “If our life is all we get to experience, then it’s the only thing that matters. If the universe has no principles, the only principles relevant are the ones we decide on. If the universe has no purpose, then we get to dictate what its purpose is.” —“Optimistic Nihilism,” a video from the Kurzgesagt YouTube channel. Before you read this quote as a case for selfishness, watch the soothing 6-minute video! I’m currently trying to convert sad + anxious energy (due to external circumstances) into optimistic nihilism, which views the world through a nothing *really* matters and therefore everything is possible/hopeful lens.
Listening to: This new Italian bop, “Il primo bacio” by CARA. You don’t even have to speak the language to enjoy this sexy warm weather jam.
Grateful for: Discovering new treats. My new lover is Nada Moo birthday cake coconut milk ice cream. Top with corn flakes for CRONCH and thank me later.
Wanting: Glossier’s new Ultralip. Described on their site as “the (cashmere) sweatpants of lipstick,” Ultralip is another cushy workhorse product promising 3-in-1 balm/tint/gloss results. I’ve got my eyes on shades Vesper and Villa. I reviewed some Glossier products in a paid subscriber post and lucky for you, BBM is still on sale for $30 for a full year until May 30th! Cop your subscription and report back to me on your favorite products from the ubiquitous pink G.
Loving: Just to keep the beauty theme going, I snagged the MILK MAKEUP Vegan Milk Cleanser at Marshall’s the other day, and I love it. I really never switch it up from my normal cleanser, but I’ve been using this here and there and it makes my skin feel super soft and clean without stripping. Side note: are we allowed to buy products from Marshall’s? Girlies? Gays? I need an answer. I’m still going to do it once in a while, and I know some are expired, but I need an answer.
Thinking: Yesterday I was kind of going through it outside of my Philly apartment when a woman approached and asked if I was ok. She was alluding to concerns of abuse and I feel terrible for how I reacted, which was honestly dismissive and cold. Of course, I was a far cry from being in the situation she suspected, but she was clearly coming from a place of genuine concern. It’s not often people step beyond their comfort zones to help a stranger like that. I can’t stop thinking I wish I would have been warmer, put my emotional state aside to express gratitude. These are the failed interactions that haunt us forever. So in short, remember that:
1.) We are beholden to each other.
2.) It’s ok to offer strangers support. You literally never know when you might save a life, even just in the form of restoring momentary faith in humanity.
3.) Their reactions might have nothing to do with you.
Yes, baby, the rumors are true: Broke But Moisturized is $30 for an entire year now through the end of May. That’s like a gel manicure or a tank of gas, both of which are way more essential to your daily well-being, but we encourage frivolity in this space.
PS: I’m 5 paid subscribers from my goal for the first year of launching. Let’s go!
