Quote of the Week: “Some ways we'll work, and other ways we'll play, yeah / But I know we can't all stay here forever / So I'm gonna write my words on the face of today.”— Blind Melon, “Change.”
I’m just coming off a 4-hour drive and I must have listened to that song five times. Sometimes when writing (and life… though, what’s really the difference?) gets tough, those prophetic words in the late Shannon Hoon’s effortless rasp envelope me. If you need a reminder to make use of the limited time you have in that sun-burnt skin sack, “Change” at 75 mph with the windows down is a good place to start.
Grateful for: The cowboy boots I just found in my trunk, where they’ve been stuffed for *five years*. I’m not sure what that says about me, but I know it’s not good. ANYWHO, I’m en route to Austin, Texas this week! Austin’s been on my list for years. It feels sacrilegious that it’s taken me this long to check out any city that invites visitors to keep it weird, so here’s to eating barbeque and swimming at Barton Springs and losing my mind in the southwestern heat.
Wanting: Speaking of trips, I could actually go for a relaxing one. We all know there’s a big difference between travel and vacation. Travel, like this long weekend in Austin, involves filling every second possible with experience and stimulation. Vacation is where we exercise the sexiest of the seven deadly sins: sloth, lust, and gluttony. When I get back from Austin, I’m going to start devising a plan for a true eat/drink/tan excursion. Basically I want to get an ass massage on a boat like this throwback photo of Ben and Jen.
Loving: The past few days I’ve been making a simple smoothie of pineapple, half a banana, a vanilla Siggi’s yogurt, and ice. This is so stripped down from what I’d typically have in a smoothie (some kind of greens, protein, a non-dairy fat like avocado, etc.), but I’m obsessed. It’s refreshing and filling and makes me feel like I’m giving my body a little treat. You know what they say about pineapple ;)!
Excited for: The next couple collab posts coming your way. If you haven’t read June’s Let’s Be Friends with Adrienne Ruberti, now is the time!
Thinking: About the infinite ways being a dog owner changes me for the better each day. I’ve learned patience, responsibility, selflessness, and the goddamn magic of sustained eye contact between human and beast. Maybe it’s true that some people aren’t meant to nurture, or simply aren’t able to given their circumstances; but the sheer privilege of raising a puppy is my greatest joy. My heart explodes in color like a desert superbloom!
